Situated on the top of the hill surrounding Montecatini Terme, the medieval part of Montecatini is the original nucleus of the locality.
Montecatini Alto is located on two hills. On one side you will see the Rocca del Castello Vecchio, the Church of San Pietro and the Bell Tower, while on the other side you will see the Clock Tower and the Church of Carmine in Baroque style.
Montecatini Alto is an ancient medieval castle, once surrounded by walls, with eight gates. Today you can admire only one: Porta di Borgo with the Benedictine Monastery of S. Maria a Ripa.
The square, which has stone flooring, Art Nouveau decorations, and is home to the Teatro dei Risorti, is a true treasure of the medieval village. Walking from one hill to another to discover the Tower, the Fortress, and the churches you will find in the center. Taking a walk in Montecatini Alto is a pleasure for the eyes. The main square is full of restaurants, where you can taste a good wine and taste typical Tuscan recipes. The best and delightful way to reach the top [from Easter to October 31st] is to use the funicular. Inaugurated in 1898, it connects the ancient village [station Monte] with the area of the Spa [station Valley]. Two red trains, named Gigio and Gigia, will take you to your destination in just ten minutes. Pulled by a steel cable, it also led Giuseppe Verdi to the summit on his maiden voyage, to enjoy the quiet of the place and have fun with his friends of the past drinking wine in one of the premises of the square.
